Tips for a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign
Looking to use Kickstarter to finance your movie or Indiegogo, and GoFundMe for your next crowdfunding project? Here are a few tips to help ensure a successful crowd funding campaign.
1) ASK YOUR FRIENDS TO HELP YOU
You’ll certainly require the help of good friends to pull this off, especially if you’re starting with no sources. Running an effective crowd funding campaign– just like making a motion picture– is eventually a collaborative undertaking. Not necessarily discussing assistance through donations.
Keep in mind that support is available in various types throughout the campaigning process that are equally as vital. Do anything you could to urge endorsements or activity such as web link sharing and re-tweeting. Anything that will certainly bring more attention to your campaign!
2) CREATE GOOD, VISUALLY DISTINCTIVE ARTWORK
This not only means the poster or screen shot you’ll use on Kickstarter/Indiegogo or any other crowdfunding websites – having a film website is part of this. This serves more opportunities to drive traffic to your campaign. If you have a website for your film that is well designed and visually appealing, it adds credibility to you and your project.
3) SHOOT A TRAILER (IF YOU CAN)
A trailer? Before I’ve even shot the movie? That’s right.
Many a crowfunding endeavor has been greenlit based solely on the charisma of the project creator, but if you’re a narrative filmmaker, the fact remains that you have to help people see why your story is unique, and be entertaining enough to compel people to reach for their wallets. Because at the end of the day, that’s what your project is, entertainment. A movie trailer is one of the most effective way to pitch a narrative film concept.
4) GET EVANGELISTS ON YOUR SIDE
You cannot expect to achieve the critical mass of support necessary for a successful campaign on your social network alone. This is why you’ll need evangelists – in this case, people who will preach the gospel of your project to their audiences – preferably with networks that are way bigger with your own. People will always lend an ear to a good story, but finding those ears takes hard work and persistence.
5) KNOW THE STATISTICS
As much as people want to help you and see you succeed in life – a whole bunch of us really just wanna watch the DVD! In this way, you can almost think of Kickstarter/Indiegogo as a ‘pre-sale’ venue – a chance for your audience to purchase the movie before it comes out, at a price comparable to what they would pay in the traditional DVD marketplace. To make this even more compelling, many successful campaigns offer their film for a donation amount below the price point of an actual DVD. Offering a digital download of your finished product (rather than a physical DVD) could help you keep this reward cheap. (Remember: with a digital version of your movie, there are no hardware or shipping costs to factor in!)
We suggest sitting down with your partners or producers and hammering out a detailed budget, taking into account your anticipated needs for all phases of your project which includes production, post-production, and even festival entry fees. Try to make this budget as lean as humanly possible and allow this to guide you in your setting your goal amount.
